Linfield takes the rubber match
Willamette falls to 3-6 and 2-4 in the NWC
KEIZER, Ore. — Willamette University (3-6, 2-4 NWC) fell to Linfield University (9-4, 4-2 NWC) with a final score of 11-6 on Sunday at Roto Rooter Park. Despite a four-run surge in the seventh inning, the Bearcats could not overcome Linfield's offensive strength, which included two home runs. Carter Stoltz contributed with a crucial RBI single during the seventh, but Linfield's consistent scoring, especially in the later innings, secured its victory.
Linfield seized control in the seventh inning with a four-run burst, punctuated by a three-run homer from a pinch-hitter, breaking a 6-6 deadlock. This surge put Linfield ahead for good, as they extended their lead in the eighth with two unearned runs, capitalizing on a hit by pitch and an error, and added a solo homer in the ninth to seal the victory.
Willamette mounted a spirited comeback in the seventh, scoring four runs to level the game. A single by Nate Hamburger brought home a run, followed by Stoltz's RBI single, which set the stage for Beckett Montgomery's two-RBI single. However, despite the rally, the Bearcats' offense was stymied in the final two innings, unable to capitalize on Trevor Sostman's eighth-inning double.
Earlier, the Bearcats had chipped away at a deficit with timely hits and aggressive baserunning. Olen Nofziger's single in the sixth initiated a sequence that saw him score on an error, while Hamburger's RBI single in the fifth inning brought Willamette within striking distance. Despite these efforts, missed opportunities and defensive lapses proved costly.
Nate Hamburger contributed with two hits and two RBIs, also adding a stolen base. Olen Nofziger scored twice while recording two hits and drawing a walk. Beckett Montgomery delivered two RBIs with a hit during his plate appearances. Matthew Rienhardt provided offensive support with a hit and a walk, while also adding five assists in the field.
Nate Schikore led Willamette with 6 innings pitched, allowing 4 earned runs on 10 hits while striking out 1 and walking none, earning the loss. Elliot Hsu struggled in relief, giving up 6 earned runs over 2 innings on 5 hits, with 2 walks and 1 strikeout. For Linfield, Casey Struckmeier delivered a strong performance, earning the win with 5 innings, conceding only 1 earned run on 4 hits, striking out 2 and walking 1. Brian Mannion was effective in relief for Linfield, pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits, and striking out 4 without issuing a walk.
The Bearcats hold a record of 3-6 and are 2-4 in the NWC. Linfield has a record of 9-4 and is 4-2 in the NWC.
