SALEM, Ore. -- Robbie Gibbs (Sr., Wing, Aptos, CA/St. Francis Central Coast Catholic HS) from the Willamette University men's basketball team has been named to the 2014-15 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court for his academic success as a student-athlete.
A total of 1,000 men's basketball players from all levels of NCAA and NAIA competition were selected to receive the award this year, setting a new record high. More than 350 college teams were represented on the Honors Court.
In order to qualify for the Honors Court each student-athlete had to be a junior or a senior, own a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher (4.0 scale) at the end of the academic year, and be at his current NCAA or NAIA college or university for at least one season.
Robbie Gibbs (Sr., Wing) graduated from Willamette this spring with an English major. He was a member of the men's basketball team all four years and played in 33 games over the past two seasons. He saw action in 18 games as a junior in 2013-14 before playing in 15 games in 2014-15.
"Robbie's performance in the classroom goes hand in hand with the soft spoken leadership he displayed all season long." Willamette Head Coach Kip Ioane said. "He is a guy who contributed in so many ways that aren't counted in a box score and I'm very happy his academic prowess is being recognized nationally."
Willamette competes in NCAA Division III and is a member of the Northwest Conference. The Bearcats went 8-6 in the final 14 games of the regular season and qualified for the four-team NWC Tournament with an 8-8 conference record. Willamette lost to NWC regular season champion Whitworth University in the semifinals of the NWC Tournament and finished the season with a 10-16 overall mark.
The Bearcats went 6-5 at home in Cone Field House, including 5-3 in conference games. WU downed Pacific 70-63 on the final day of the regular season at Cone Field House to secure the fourth and final berth into the NWC Tournament.
