WALLA WALLA, Wash. — Willamette University (7-5, 2-1 NWC) narrowly defeated Whitman College (6-6, 1-1 NWC) 58-55 in a tense conference matchup at Sherwood Center. The Bearcats secured the win by forcing 30 turnovers and converting 16 steals, while the Blues led by four at the half before Willamette's second-half rally.
Willamette capitalized on Whitman's 15 turnovers to convert 10 points off turnovers, which was crucial in maintaining the competitive edge throughout the first half. Despite shooting only 25 percent from the field, the Bearcats' defense recorded eight steals and two blocks, keeping the game close. At the end of the first half, Willamette trailed by four, with the scoreboard reading 29-25 in favor of Whitman.
The Bearcats capitalized on Whitman's turnovers, converting 15 points off 15 turnovers, which was pivotal in gaining an edge during the second half. Willamette's defensive intensity was highlighted by eight steals, contributing to a tense back-and-forth battle. With a combination of effective fast breaks and strong free-throw shooting, the Bearcats outscored the Blues 33-26 in the second half, leading to a 58-55 finish.
Willamette improved to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in NWC play with their victory. Whitman now holds a 6-6 overall record and is 1-1 in NWC competition.
The next challenge for the Bearcats will take place at home against Pacific Lutheran University. The game is set for Friday, Jan. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Salem, Oregon.
