Willamette Tops Pacific Lutheran

SALEM, Ore. — Willamette University (8-5, 3-1 NWC) secured an 81-76 victory over Pacific Lutheran University (7-6, 1-3 NWC) on Friday at Cone Field House. The Bearcats' defense played a pivotal role, forcing 21 turnovers and recording 14 steals. They capitalized on these opportunities, converting them into 23 points. Despite trailing by three at halftime, the Bearcats surged in the second half, outscoring Pacific Lutheran 50-42 to clinch the win.
Willamette capitalized on Pacific Lutheran's 13 turnovers, converting them into 11 points, and excelled with 14 points in the paint. The home team also showed strength in fast breaks, adding nine points in transition. Despite these efforts, the Bearcats trailed 34-31 at the end of the first half, as Pacific Lutheran's 3-point shooting and second-chance opportunities kept them slightly ahead.
The Bearcats surged past Pacific Lutheran in the second half, demonstrating strong composure at the free-throw line by converting 19 of 22 attempts. Willamette capitalized on turnovers, scoring 12 points off eight Pacific Lutheran miscues, and maintained a six-point advantage on fast breaks. Despite being outrebounded on the offensive glass, their efficient shooting and defensive pressure secured a narrow victory, concluding the half ahead 81-76.
With the win, the Bearcats improved to 8-5 overall and 3-1 in Northwest Conference play. Pacific Lutheran is now 7-6 overall and 1-3 in Northwest Conference competition.
Looking ahead, the Bearcats will face the University of Puget Sound on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 5 p.m. The game will take place in Salem, Oregon, as Willamette defends their home court.
