Whitman Slips Past Willamette

SALEM, Ore. — Willamette (11-8, 6-4 NWC) fell to Whitman (8-10, 3-6 NWC) 82-79 in a tightly contested game at Cone Field House. Willamette led 43-35 at halftime, but Whitman outscored them 47-36 in the second half. Willamette's defense forced 17 turnovers, contributing 11 steals, while Whitman's balanced attack included 12 three-pointers to secure the victory.
Willamette capitalized on turnovers to seize momentum, scoring 17 points off Whitman's 11 turnovers in the first half. The home team excelled in fast breaks, adding 11 points in transition, with Tanner Overby contributing significantly, including a layup at 9:38 and two assists. The Bearcats also held a defensive edge with seven steals and four blocks, closing the half with a 43-35 lead.
In a closely contested second half, Overby led with crucial plays, including a layup at 1:27 and two free throws with five seconds remaining, totaling 15 points in the game. Despite the Bearcats' six 3-pointers, Whitman capitalized on their 15-for-24 shooting accuracy, maintaining a slight edge. Whitman's Ali Efe Isik contributed significantly with points in the paint, securing the visitors' 82-79 victory after two halves.
The Bearcats hold an 11-8 overall record and are 6-4 in NWC play. Whitman stands at 8-10 on the season and 3-6 in NWC competition.
