SALEM, Ore. — Willamette (11-9, 6-5 NWC) fell to Whitworth (15-4, 9-1 NWC) 93-85 in a competitive matchup at Cone Field House. The Bearcats led by three at halftime, but Whitworth outscored the home team 56-45 in the second half to secure the win. Despite the loss, Willamette's offense was strong from beyond the arc, connecting on 13 three-pointers, while forcing 11 steals throughout the game.
Willamette and Whitworth traded leads throughout the opening half, showcasing a tightly contested battle. The Bearcats held a slight edge by converting eight 3-pointers compared to Whitworth's four, contributing significantly to their 40-37 halftime advantage. Despite committing ten turnovers, the Bearcats capitalized on their bench depth, outscoring Whitworth's reserves 16-7, and matched the visitors' 12 points in the paint. The half ended with the Bearcats narrowly ahead.
Whitworth surged ahead in the second half with a balanced offensive effort, converting 19 of 24 free throws and outscoring Willamette 56-45. A key factor was Whitworth's 21 total rebounds, including seven on the offensive end, which helped generate second-chance points.
