WU Soccer Players Compete on Successful Summer Teams

SALEM, ORE. -- Several Willamette University men's soccer players have been competing for successful summer league teams. Mike McGrew (MF/F, Portland, OR/Grant HS), a sophomore in 2010-11, plays for the Westside Metros U19 Internationals, while Loftin Langsdorf (So., D/MF, Vancouver, WA/Columbia River High School and Timothy Ikehara-Martin (So., MF, Vancouver, WA/Heritage HS) play for the Columbia Premier Timbers.

McGrew helped the Westside Metros win the Oregon State Tournament before contributing to the team's first place finish at the United States Region IV Tournament in Albuquerque, N.M. During the regional, McGrew scored two goals and earned two assists to help the Internationals achieve a 6-0 record.

It was the second consecutive regional title for the Westside Metros. The regional championship allowed the team to advance to the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships near Kansas City in Overland Park, Kan.

In the first round of group play at the National Championships, the Westside Metros were defeated by the FC Delco Hammerheads from Downington, Pa., 1-0, on July 21. In the team's second game, the Internationals fell 4-2 to the Crew Juniors from Columbus, Ohio. The Westside Metros will take on the Andromeda 91 Navy Soccer Club from Platno, Texas.

The U.S. Region IV Tournament won by Westside Metros also included the Columbia Premier Timbers. Langsdorf and Martin competed for the Timbers, who went 1-2 at the regional, including a loss to the Westside Metros. In the game against the Westside Metros, Langsdorf scored a goal that was assisted by Martin. Langdsorf also scored a goal in the Timbers' win during the regional.

Willamette University will begin the 2010 season on Wednesday, Sept. 1, when the Bearcats host crosstown rival Corban College. Game time at Sparks Field in set for 7 p.m. (PDT). The game will be part of a doubleheader that begins with the WU women's soccer team taking on Corban at 5 p.m. (PDT).
