Men's Tennis Opens Fall Season at ITA Northwest Regionals at Whitman
SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University's men's tennis team will take to the courts this weekend beginning on Friday, Sept. 19, at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) 2014 Small College Northwest Regional tournament hosted by Whitman College (Wash.) in Walla Walla, Washington.
Bearcats send six singles players and three doubles teams to Walla Walla
SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University's men's tennis team will take to the courts this weekend beginning on Friday, Sept. 19, at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) 2014 Small College Northwest Regional tournament hosted by Whitman College (Wash.) in Walla Walla, Washington.
Action begins Friday at 1 p.m. (PST) with singles qualifying matches on the six outdoor Whitman College Courts and four indoor courts at the Bratton Tennis Center. The doubles qualifying matches follow singles play, but will not begin earlier than 4:30 p.m.
Eight qualifiers from Friday's singles draws will move into Saturday's main single draw with four doubles pairings from the qualifying rounds moving onto the main doubles draw Saturday afternoon.
The main singles draw kicks off Saturday morning's play at 8 a.m. (PST) on, again, the outdoor and indoor courts. The main doubles draw follows the completion of the singles matches but will not start earlier than 3 p.m.
The Bearcats will be led once again this season by Sam Wexman (Jr., Tiburon, CA/Tamiscal HS). As a sophomore, Wexman played at the No. 1 position throughout all of last season picking up victories over Puget Sound's Daniel Deuel (6-4, 4-6, 1-0 [10-5]) and Linfield's Micah Roos (6-0, 6-0).
Along with Wexman, Jack Schreiber (Sr., Solana Beach, CA/The Grauer School) comes back for his final season as a Bearcat after earning Second Team All-Northwest Conference honors last season. Schreiber picked up six victories last year in singles competition that included back-to-back wins at the No. 2 position against Pacific Lutheran's Sam Angel (6-3, 6-1) and Linfield's Kelsey Rosborough (6-2, 6-2).
This is the only tournament currently on the fall schedule for Willamette.Sam Wexman looks to continue his play this season at the No. 1 position for the Bearcats.
