Bearcats walk over shorthanded Loggers
The Willamette men won 6-1 over Puget Sound
SALEM, Ore. – In a dominant display of skill and depth, the Willamette University men's tennis team took care of business at home on Saturday, dismantling the visiting Puget Sound Loggers in a 6-1 Northwest Conference victory.
From the opening serves of doubles play, it was clear the Bearcats came to play. Willamette set the tone early by sweeping all three doubles matches to secure the inaugural point of the afternoon.
At the No. 1 spot, the duo of AJ Avansino and Hudson Snyder fended off a late push from Puget Sound's Sebastian Silverstein and Gavin Dille to win 6-4. Meanwhile, Luca Casano and Sohnosuke Sakaguchi looked in mid-season form at the No. 2 position, comfortably dispatching Sam Lowery and Aidan Kresko 6-3. With a walkover victory at No. 3 for Jake Bronson and Baily Livengood, the Bearcats headed into singles play with all the momentum.
The dominance only intensified as the matches moved to individual play. Willamette's middle of the lineup proved to be an impenetrable wall for the Loggers.
Jake Bronson (No. 2) and Hudson Snyder (No. 4) put on a clinic in efficiency, both finishing their matches with identical 6-2, 6-0 scores. Sohnosuke Sakaguchi was equally impressive at the No. 3 spot, surrendering only three games in a 6-2, 6-1 rout of Sam Lowery.
The most competitive battle of the day occurred at the No. 1 singles position. Willamette's AJ Avansino came out firing, taking the first set 6-1 against Gavin Dille. However, Dille fought back to take the second set in a tiebreak, eventually edging out Avansino in a marathon 10-8 pro-set tiebreaker for the Loggers' lone point of the day.
The Bearcats also picked up points at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions via walkover, with Luca Casano and Jack Hally officially credited with the wins.
With the 6-1 victory, the Bearcats continue to show they are a force to be reckoned with in the conference, combining veteran composure with raw power. Willamette fans have plenty to be excited about as the team looks to carry this momentum into their next match.
