Bearcats Battle Hard but Fall 7–0 to Whitman
Sohnosuke Sakaguchi battled through a three-set thriller at No. 3 singles
SALEM, OR — The Willamette Women's Tennis team faced one of their toughest challenges of the season on their home courts this weekend, falling 7-0 to a clinical Whitman Blues squad. While the final scoreline suggests a sweep, the Bearcats pushed their opponents to the limit in several marquee matchups, proving they can go toe-to-toe with the conference's elite.
The afternoon began with a fast-paced doubles round. Whitman took the early 1-0 lead in the team score by sweeping all three matches. The No. 1 duo of AJ Avansino and Hudson Snyder managed to take two games off the Blues' top pair, while Baily Livengood and Jake Bronson battled to a 6-3 finish at the No. 3 spot, but the Blues' depth proved too much to overcome early on.
As the match moved into singles play, the Bearcats found their rhythm and began to pressure the visitors. The match of the day took place at the No. 3 flight, where Sohnosuke Sakaguchi came out firing. Sakaguchi stunned Whitman's Artem Manov by taking the first set 6-3. Manov responded in the second, but the third set was a back-and-forth slugfest that ultimately swung in favor of the Blues, ending in a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 heartbreaker.
Willamette also showed incredible resilience at the No. 2 and No. 4 positions. At No. 2 singles, Jake Bronson refused to go down quietly against Niklas Jensen. After dropping the first set 6-4, Bronson forced a grueling second-set tiebreaker, eventually falling just short in a 7-6(7-4) battle. Similarly, Hudson Snyder played a marathon first set at No. 4 singles, pushing Guillermo Rodriguez to an 8-6 tiebreaker before finally yielding.
At the top of the lineup, AJ Avansino put up a spirited fight against Alexander Stage, but fell 6-3, 6-2. Jack Hally and Luca Casano rounded out the day at No. 5 and No. 6, facing a relentless Whitman attack that refused to give up ground.
While the result wasn't what the Salem faithful hoped for, the Bearcats' ability to force multiple tiebreakers and a three-set match against a top-tier program like Whitman provides a solid foundation to build on as the season continues.
The Bearcats will look to bounce back and carry that competitive energy into their next conference match-up as they will face Whitworth University Sunday, March 8th at 11:00 am.
