Salisbury edges out Willamette 6-1 in a hard-fought contest
Jake Bronson delivers a standout straight-set win at No. 2 singles
SALEM, OR — The Willamette University Bearcats faced a tough test at home on Monday, falling 6-1 to the visiting Salisbury University Sea Gulls. Despite the final score, the afternoon featured several gritty performances from the Bearcats, highlighted by a dominant victory in singles play by Jake Bronson.
The match began with a highly competitive doubles round that was much closer than the final results suggested. At the No. 1 and No. 3 spots, Willamette pushed the Sea Gulls to the limit. The duo of AJ Avansino and Hudson Snyder battled Gurv Suri and Aron Bursztyn to a narrow 7-5 finish, while Jack Hally and Jake Bronson also fell just short in a 7-5 nail-biter at the No. 3 position. Salisbury managed to sweep the doubles point, but the Bearcats proved they could go toe-to-toe with the visitors' best.
In singles play, Jake Bronson provided the highlight of the day for the Willamette faithful. Competing at the No. 2 spot, Bronson showcased his composure and skill by defeating Salisbury's Nicholas O'Dea in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. Bronson's ability to shut the door in the second set earned the Bearcats their point and energized the home crowd.
Sohnosuke Sakaguchi nearly added another point to the Willamette tally in a marathon match at No. 3 singles. After dropping the first set 6-2, Sakaguchi roared back to take the second set 6-4, forcing a 10-point tiebreaker. In a back-and-forth thriller, Salisbury's Maas Jacobs eventually outlasted Sakaguchi with a 10-8 finish.
Elsewhere in the lineup, AJ Avansino, Hudson Snyder, Jack Hally, and Luca Casano fought hard against a deep Sea Gulls roster, but Salisbury was able to pull away to secure the team victory.
While the result didn't go the Bearcats' way, the narrow margins in doubles and Sakaguchi's three-set battle show a Willamette squad that is becoming increasingly difficult to beat on their home courts.
The Bearcats will look to build on Bronson's momentum as they continue their season schedule. They will face George Fox University on Saturday, March 28th at 11:00 am.
