Bearcats Battle Hard, Fall Short Against Bruins
Sohnosuke Sakaguchi and Jack Hally notch singles wins.
SALEM, OR — It was a cloudy afternoon of high-stakes Northwest Conference action at home as the Willamette Bearcats took on a formidable George Fox squad. Despite flashes of brilliance in singles play and a gritty performance across the board, the Bearcats ultimately fell to the Bruins by a score of 5-2.
The afternoon began with a challenging doubles round. George Fox showed why they are one of the top programs in the region, sweeping all three matches to secure the opening point. Willamette's duo of Jake Bronson and Jack Hally put up a spirited fight at the No. 3 spot, pushing their opponents before ultimately falling 6-3.
As the match moved into singles play, the Bearcats refused to back down.
The highlight of the day for the Salem faithful came at the No. 6 position, where Jack Hally delivered a masterclass in composure. Hally battled through a tight first set to win 7-5, then dominated the second set 6-2 to secure a definitive victory over Joseph Vece.
Willamette also picked up a point at the No. 3 spot. Sohnosuke Sakaguchi was awarded the win via retirement, contributing to the Bearcat tally and proving his readiness to compete with the conference's best.
At the top of the lineup, AJ Avansino showed incredible resilience at No. 1 singles against Zach Moore. After dropping the first set 6-4, Avansino continued to trade heavy blows in the second, falling 6-3 in a match that was much closer than the final scoreline suggested. Similarly, at No. 4 singles, Hudson Snyder pushed Ikuho Ebisu to the brink in a competitive 6-2, 6-4 contest.
While the overall team result wasn't what the Bearcats were looking for, the individual victories by Hally and Sakaguchi provide a foundation to build on as the heart of the season approaches.
The Bearcats will look to bounce back and carry the momentum from today's singles wins into their next conference matchup.
