Bearcats come up short against Pirates
SPOKANE, Wash. — Willamette University (2-14, 1-13 NWC) was defeated by Whitworth University (12-6, 11-3 NWC) with a final score of 0-7 on Sunday at the Scotford Tennis Center. The Bearcats struggled to gain momentum, dropping all singles and doubles matches. Whitworth secured the doubles point with wins across all three courts and completed a clean sweep in singles play.
Whitworth claimed the doubles point by securing victories across all three matches. At No. 3 doubles, Matthew Morrison and Ryan Ashley defeated Jake Freeland and Jake Bronson, 6-3, in the first completed match. Whitworth's Matt Froslan and Henry Preacher followed with a 7-6(1) win at No. 1 doubles over AJ Avansino and Hudson Snyder. Whitworth completed the sweep at No. 2 doubles, with Easton Weir and Matt Hossack edging out Luca Casano and Sohnosuke Sakaguchi, 7-6(2).
In singles play, Whitworth continued its strong performance, winning all six matches. The first singles match to conclude was at No. 5, where Matt Hossack defeated Jack Hally, 6-0, 6-1. Whitworth's Connor Judson followed with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Snyder at No. 4 singles. At No. 3 singles, Ryan Ashley defeated Sakaguchi, 6-4, 6-2, pushing Whitworth's lead further.
The match was clinched at No. 6 singles, where Colby Cinqmars secured a 6-1, 6-0 win over Casano, giving Whitworth its fourth point. Whitworth continued to add to its total with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Matthew Morrison defeated Avansino, 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5), and Henry Preacher claimed a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-3) victory over Bronson. The match concluded with a final dual score of 7-0 in favor of Whitworth.
Jake Freeland participated in doubles play, pairing with Bronson, but the duo fell short in their match at No. 3 doubles. Casano competed at No. 6 singles and teamed up with Sakaguchi in No. 2 doubles, experiencing narrow losses in both encounters. Hally contested the No. 5 singles spot, ultimately facing defeat in his match. Snyder, alongside Avansino, was unable to secure a win at No. 1 doubles.
