Puget Sound Scores Twice in Second Half to Defeat Willamette, 2-0

SALEM, ORE. -- The University of Puget Sound scored twice in the second half to break a scoreless tie and defeat Willamette University, 2-0, in a Northwest Conference women's soccer game at Sparks Field on Saturday, Oct. 25. Puget Sound moved to 11-3 overall, 9-2 in the NWC, while Willamette fell to 2-13-1 overall, 1-10-1 in the NWC.

Robin Vieira scored just under four minutes into the second half at 48:48 on a 25-yard shot from the middle of the field. Her shot went into the lower right corner of the goal.

The score remained 1-0 until 82:19, when Amalia Acorda-Fey took a pass from Jacquelyn Anderson and scored from 21 yards out into the lower left portion of the goal. It was Acorda-Fey's team-leading eighth goal of the season.

Neither team scored in the first half, with Puget Sound claiming a 5-2 advantage in shots. Annie Jonsson of UPS had the only shot on goal in the first half. Her attempt was saved by Willamette goalkeeper Emily Sewall (So., GK, Petaluma, CA/Casa Grande HS) at 20:49.

The ball went out of play, leading to a corner kick for the Loggers 26 seconds later. Acorda-Fey took the corner and sent the ball into the middle of the box. A header by Emma Donckels went wide right.

Willamette forced UPS goalkeeper Lauren Thomas into two saves in the second half. The first was on a shot by Sarah Desautels (Sr., MF/F, Snohomish, WA/Glacier Park HS) at 63:01. Thomas also saved a shot by Jill Phillips (Jr., MF/GK, Fairbanks, AK/West Valley HS) at 65:59.

Sewall and Thomas each finished the game with two saves. The Loggers outshot Willamette 13-4 overall, and held a 4-2 edge in shots on goal.

The Bearcats will continue Northwest Conference action on Saturday, Nov. 1 when they host Whitworth University at Sparks Field. Game time is set for 11 a.m. (PDT).
