Early Goals Send Redlands on its way to Win over Willamette

THOUSAND OAKS, CALIF. -- The University of Redlands scored three goals in the first 14 minutes and went on to defeat Willamette University, 6-1, in women's soccer during the first round of the Best Western Inn Thousand Oaks Classic on Friday, August 29 at California Lutheran University. It was the season opener for both teams.

Willamette's goal was scored by freshman forward Emmy Manset (Fr., F, Ventura, CA/Foothill Technology HS) at 74:04.

The Bulldogs built a 3-0 lead on goals by Tanya Haggen at 5:22, McKenzie Oliger at 6:06 and Cassie Lively at 13:50. The early scoring allowed Redlands to claim a sizable win despite earning only a 14-12 advantage in total shots.

Redlands extended its lead with a two goals in the second half before Manset put WU on the scoreboard. Amy Pumputis hit the net at 53:28 for the Bulldogs and Kate Frame followed with a goal at 55:32. After Manset scored for the Bearcats, Erin Lau of Redlands completed the scoring at 87:29.

Haggen and Pumputis each finished with a goal and an assist for Redlands. Willamette's goal by Manset was unassisted.

The Bulldogs were very accurate with their shots, especially for a season opener. Redlands placed 10 of 14 shots on target. WU goalkeeper Emily Sewall (So., GK, Petaluma, CA/Casa Grande HS) registered four saves. Each team attained four corner kicks.

Willamette earned five shots on goal. Redlands goalkeepers Lexi Felix and Hannah Menk each played 45 minutes and claimed two shots on goal. Felix, who played in the first half, was credited with the win.

The Bearcats will return to action on Sunday, Aug. 31, when they will take on host California Lutheran. Game time is set for 3 p.m. (PDT).
