George Fox Wins versus Bearcats in Women's Tennis, 6-3
NEWBERG, Ore. -- Willamette University won #1 and #2 singles, as well as #1 doubles, but George Fox University earned wins in the remaining matches, as the Bruins downed the Bearcats, 6-3, in a Northwest Conference women's tennis match on Saturday, April 4. With the victory, GFU improved to 9-7 overall and to 5-4 in the NWC.
Poltavski and Smith Earn Victories in Singles and Doubles
NEWBERG, Ore. -- Willamette University won #1 and #2 singles, as well as #1 doubles, but George Fox University earned wins in the remaining matches, as the Bruins downed the Bearcats, 6-3, in a Northwest Conference women's tennis match on Saturday, April 4. With the victory, GFU improved to 9-7 overall and to 5-4 in the NWC.
Willamette received wins from Denise Poltavski (Sr., Woodland Hills, CA/El Camino Real HS) and Mikaila Smith (Fr., Mill Valley, CA/Tamalpais HS) in singles. The duo also teamed up for a triumph at #1 doubles.
In the top singles match, Poltavski edged out Sarah Tuemmler of GFU in a super tie-breaker played instead of a third set, 7-5, 0-6, 10-8. At #2 singles, Smith of Willamette outlasted Chantelle Hadeed in a super tie-breaker, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 10-7. Poltavksi and Smith earned their win at #1 doubles by defeating Tuemmler and Hadeed, 8-4.
George Fox registered wins at #2 doubles and #3 doubles.
The #2 match was won by Andrea Motley and Ali Diehl over Emily Guimont (Jr., El Dorado Hills, CA/Folsom HS) and Ellen Rumley (Fr., Anchorage, AK/East Anchorage HS), 8-3. Catrina Kwong and Krista Rey achieved the victory at #3 doubles, winning 8-1 against Katie Adams (Fr., McLean, VA/American International School) and Ashley Evans (Fr., Canby, OR/Canby HS).
GFU won all four matches from #3 through #6 singles. The Bruins claimed straight-set wins at #3, #4 and #5 singles. It took two sets decided by tie-breakers, plus a super tie-breaker, to determine the #6 singles winner. Diehl gained the narrow triumph over Evans, 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-3), 10-7.
Willamette will host Whitman College in NWC action on Saturday, April 11 at the WU Tennis Courts. Match time is slated for 3 p.m. (PDT).
