College of Idaho Defeats Bearcats, 6-3, in Women's Tennis

SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University won the top two singles matches and the #1 doubles match, but College of Idaho won the remaining matches to defeat the Bearcats, 6-3, on Friday, Feb. 13, in women's tennis action at the Courthouse Tennis Center. The Lady Yotes College moved to 1-0 on the season. Willamette fell 0-3 overall and to 0-1 in the spring.

Denise Poltavski (Sr., Woodland Hills, CA/El Camino Real HS) of Willamette won #1 singles and teammate Mikaila Smith (Fr., Mill Valley, CA/Tamalpais HS) took #2 singles. Poltavski and Smith combined to win #1 doubles.

The Lady Yotes earned victories from #3 through #6 singles and at #2 and #3 doubles.

At #1 singles, Poltavski swept past Shae Stults from College od Idaho, 6-0, 6-0. In the #2 singles match, Smith of Willamette battled back to defeat Megan Huffman in a super tie-breaker played instead of a third set, 6-7 (6-8), 6-1, 10-7.

Poltavksi and Smith's win at #1 doubles was by an 8-3 score over Stults and Allie Boyd.

College of Idaho's Megan Huffman and Erin Huffman defeated WU's team of Ellen Rumley (Fr., Anchorage, AK/East Anchorage HS) and Emily Guimont (Jr., El Dorado Hills, CA/Folsom HS) at #2 doubles, 8-2. Laura Humphreys and Vanessa Almaraz from C of I downed Katie Adams (Fr., McLean, VA/American International School) and Erin Tokutomi (Fr., Cupertino, CA/Homestead HS), 8-3, in the #3 doubles match.

The Lady Yotes won two close matches while gaining victories at the bottom four singles positions. At #3 singles, Humphreys held off Rumley, 6-4, 6-4. In the #5 singles match, Erin Huffman downed Adams, 6-4, 6-3.

Willamette will return to action on Friday, Feb. 20 at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Ore., at 4 p.m. (PST). It will be the Bearcats' first Northwest Conference match of the season.
