SALEM, ORE. -- To celebrate the start of the home football schedule and to get the Willamette University community fired up about the fall sports season, several campus groups are sponsoring Countdown to Kickoff on Friday, Sept. 11 and Saturday, Sept. 12. The two-day event will feature a variety of activities, ranging from a special "tailgate" brunch to a web concert with Reel Big Fish to laser tag. Also included will be the chance for one Willamette College of Liberal Arts student to kick a field goal to win free tuition for one semester.
Willamette University will play its football home opener against California Lutheran University on Saturday, Sept. 12 at McCulloch Stadium at 1:30 p.m. (PDT). The Bearcat volleyball team also will play at home on Sept. 12, when they host Warner Pacific College at Cone Field House at 7 p.m.
Leading up to the football and volleyball games will be plenty of excitement from the Countdown to Kickoff. Primary sponsors are the Willamette Events Board, Senior Class Council, Junior Class Council, Willamette Athletics and the Outdoor Program.
Friday, September 11th at Brown Field
6:00 p.m. - Music by ASWU Sound
6:00 p.m. - Grass Volleyball, Horseshoes
7:00 p.m. - Paper Football Tournament (Sign up by 4 p.m. in the Office of Student Involvement on the 2nd Floor of the Putnam University Center. For more information, contact Bryan Schmidt.)
7:00 p.m. - Countdown Concert: Headliner - Reel Big Fish; Featuring opening acts: Suburban legends and One Pin Short (Sponsored by the Willamette Events Board and the Junior and Senior Class Councils. Student ID required for entry.)
8:00 p.m. - Campfires with Smores (Sponsored by Outdoor Program)
Saturday, September 12th at McCulloch Stadium (Except for tailgate brunch at Goudy Commons and volleyball match at Cone Field House)
10:00 a.m. - Tailgate Brunch (Bon Apptit features tailgate-inspired food at brunch in Goudy with Willamette meal plan)
10:30 a.m. - Fraternity and Sorority Tailgate (Join the Greek community for root beer floats and more fun activities. Sponsored by the Panhellenic and Interfraternity Councils.)
10:30 a.m. - Inflatable Laser Tag (Sponsored by the Willamette Events Board. Student ID required.)
10:30 a.m. - Club Booth walkway (Check out what different clubs have to offer on campus)
10:30 a.m. - Haagen Dazs Ice Cream Giveaway
10:30 a.m. - Origami, Face painting
1:00 p.m. - Soran Bushi Dance
1:25 p.m. - Coin Toss (Featuring Taiko Drummers with guest of honor TIU President Arai)
1:30 p.m. - Kickoff of Football Game: Willamette Bearcats vs. California Lutheran Kingsmen at McCulloch Stadium.
End of 1st Quarter - Drawing for Kick for Tuition
(Must be present to win. Willamette College of Liberal Arts students can earn tickets for the drawing throughout the week at other campus events or pick one up at the game. Must be a current Willamette CLA student to win.)
Halftime - Kick for Tuition (Winner of 1st Quarter drawing will attempt to kick a field goal to win a semesters worth of tuition)
Halftime - New Student Introduction: Willamette Athletics invites all new students to the field)
