WALLA WALLA, Wash. — Whitman College edged Willamette University in a tense five-set match, 25-23, 31-33, 30-28, 14-25, 15-10, on Friday at Sherwood Center. The home team capitalized on a strong performance in the decisive fifth set to secure the victory. The Bearcats' serving was on display with 10 aces, but Whitman countered with an effective attack, notching 66 kills to clinch the hard-fought win.
Katey Cramer led the Bearcats with 23 kills, contributing significantly to her 26 total points. Caroline Jameson added 17 kills and one block, finishing with 18 points. Leina Chu facilitated the offense with 46 assists, while Dream Takemoto anchored the defense with 18 digs.
Willamette has an overall record of 3-6 and stands at 1-1 in the Northwest Conference. Whitman holds a 2-6 overall record and is 1-0 in Northwest Conference play.
Looking ahead, the Bearcats will host the University of Puget Sound on September 26. The game is set to take place in Salem, OR at 7 p.m.
