SALEM, Ore. — Willamette University edged past Warner Pacific University 3-2 on Sunday at Sparks Field. The Bearcats capitalized on a strong offensive second half, with two goals that sealed the victory. The Knights' defense was tested, facing 21 shots and making 11 saves, but could not contain Willamette's attack. Despite a resilient effort from Warner Pacific, the Bearcats secured the win with a game-winning goal in the closing stages.
The first half began with Claire Warthen quickly giving the home team an early lead in the 28th second, assisted by Sierra Brown. However, the Knights equalized just over two minutes later through Kiya Gramps. Siera Edwards stood firm in goal, making crucial saves, including a notable stop against Emily Robinett in the closing moments, maintaining a 1-1 scoreline at the end of the half.
The second half began with an immediate impact from Warthen, who scored with the assistance of Erin Denney in the 48th minute, pushing the home team's lead to 2-1. The Bearcats continued to apply pressure with numerous attempts, including a penalty kick goal by Natalie Rodriguez-De La Torre in the 78th minute, extending the lead to 3-1. Despite a late goal by the Knights' Kylie Warner in the 86th minute, the Bearcats' robust defense maintained their advantage to secure the win.
Rodriguez-De La Torre scored the game-winning goal, converting one of her two shots on goal. Warthen tallied two goals from six shots, with both shots on target leading to scores. Edwards, in goal, made four saves across 81 minutes to secure a win. Denney contributed an assist and managed three shots, one of which was on goal.
In their next game, the Bearcats will travel to Newberg, OR, to take on George Fox University. The match is set for September 12, with kickoff at 5 p.m.
