WALLA WALLA, Wash. — Whitman College secured a 1-0 victory over Willamette University on Sunday at the Whitman Athletic Fields. The decisive goal came in the second half, marking Whitman's only score out of 11 total shots. The Bearcats managed four shots, with their goalkeeper recording six saves to keep the match close.
The first half saw a defensive battle unfold, with both teams unable to find the back of the net. Willamette's Siera Edwards played a crucial role, making key saves in the 36th and 45th minutes to deny the Blues opportunities and maintain the score at 0-0. Despite numerous fouls, including two by Claire Warthen, the defensive efforts of the Bearcats held strong, setting the stage for a tense second half.
The second half started with a defensive stand from the Bearcats, highlighted by Edwards making three crucial saves within the first four minutes, stopping attempts by Whitman's Leah Barnes, Emma Foley, and Gracia Larson. Despite Edwards' efforts, the Blues broke through with a goal by Kiki Glorioso in the 59th minute, assisted by Foley. Warthen and Stevie Bergstrom tested the Whitman goalkeeper with attempts in the 70th and 72nd minutes, but both efforts were thwarted, leaving the Bearcats unable to capitalize and equalize before the end of the match.
Edwards played a crucial role in goal, posting six saves while facing 11 shots and allowing just one goal. Warthen contributed offensively with one shot on goal. Natalie Rodriguez-De La Torre added pressure with a shot attempt during the game. Bergstrom also took a shot, though it did not reach the target.
