Bearcats battle to 1-1 draw with Pioneers
Maddee Reid scored the only goal for the Bearcats
PORTLAND, Ore. — Willamette University and Lewis & Clark College battled to a 1-1 draw on Sunday at Griswold Stadium. Willamette's goal came in the second half, leveling the match after Lewis & Clark initially took the lead with a first-half goal. The teams were evenly matched, each with 16 shots and 6 shots on goal. Despite the Bearcats' 15 total shots and 4 saves by their goalkeeper, the contest ended without a winner.
Maddee Reid scored the only goal for the Bearcats, converting her lone shot on goal. Siera Edwards made four saves, facing 16 shots during the match. Erin Denney contributed with three shots, one of which was on target. Amanda McArthur added pressure on offense with three shots, two of them on goal.
Willamette opened the first half by applying offensive pressure early, with several shot attempts, including efforts from McArthur and Claire Warthen, but were unable to convert as all shots missed the target or were saved by the Pioneers' Anna Ingadottir. Despite the aggressive start, the home team's defense held firm, with Ingadottir making multiple key saves to keep the score level.
Lewis & Clark responded with a series of their own attempts, notably from Mischa Vanek and Kate Meinhard, but Edwards stood strong in goal for Willamette, making crucial saves to maintain a clean sheet. The half concluded with both teams locked in a scoreless tie, setting the stage for a competitive second half.
The second half began with LC taking the lead in the 79th minute through Grace Smith's goal. However, Willamette's Reid quickly responded, equalizing the score just two minutes later. The half continued with both teams exchanging shots, but neither could break the deadlock.
The Bearcats' defensive efforts, particularly by goalkeeper Edwards, were key in maintaining the scoreline. Edwards made several crucial saves, including stops against shots from Sophia Gill and Carli Driskill. The match concluded with a 1-1 draw, as both teams' late attempts to find a winner were unsuccessful.
The Bearcats hold a record of 3-7-9 overall and 2-6-8 in conference play. The Pioneers stand at 3-11-6 overall and 3-8-5 in conference action.
