ST. LOUIS — The Willamette University volleyball team faced a challenging day at the WashU Field House, splitting their matches against Webster University and Bluffton University. In the first match, the Bearcats outlasted Webster in a thrilling five-set encounter, winning 25-14, 25-22, 22-25, 20-25, 15-4. Willamette's 11 service aces played a crucial role in securing the victory, as they established a strong lead in the first set and dominated the final set.
Alayna Hughes made a significant impact in serving, recording five aces while also contributing nine digs. Dream Takemoto showcased her dual skill set with four aces and a team-high 15 digs. Leina Chu excelled as a setter, delivering 41 assists, while Emalia Freitas led the way in attack efficiency, achieving a .478 hitting percentage with 13 kills.
However, the Bearcats faced a setback in their second match, falling to Bluffton University 3-1. The Beavers took the first set 25-23, but Willamette responded with a strong 25-14 win in the second set. Bluffton regained control, winning the third and fourth sets 25-20 and 25-19, respectively. The match featured impressive serving from both teams, with the Beavers recording 12 aces to the Bearcats' 10.
Leina Chu continued her standout performance, leading the Bearcats with 32 assists. Dream Takemoto was a defensive anchor, contributing 27 digs and two service aces. Caroline Jameson emerged as a key offensive player, securing 11 kills with a hitting percentage of .308, while Chelsea Velez added 11 kills and 14 digs to the Bearcats' efforts.
With the split results, the Bearcats now hold a 1-3 overall record, while the Beavers improve to 2-2 overall after their victory. The Gorlocks remain winless at 0-3 following their match against Willamette.
